Firdaws al-Jinan : fi Shamail wa Manaqib al-Anbiya' al-Madhkurin fi al-Furqan, is a classical biographical work written by the renowned scholar al-Imam Zayn al-Dīn ‘Abd al-Ra’uf al-Munawi (952–1031 AH / 1545–1622 CE), rahmatullahi ta'ala 'alayhi. It details the noble traits (shama’il) and virtues (manaqib) of the Prophets' mentioned specifically in the Qur'an al-Karim (al-Furqan).

Imam al-Munawi

He is 'Abd al-Ra'uf ibn Taj al-ʿarifin al-Munawi (Manawi) (952–1031 AH / 1545–1622 CE), rahimahullah. He was a prominent Ottoman-era Egyptian Islamic scholar, recognised as a leading authority in Shafiʿi jurisprudence, hadith scholarship, history, and Sufi mysticism. Born in Cairo to a scholarly family, al-Munawi memorised the Qurʾan before reaching puberty and pursued advanced studies under renowned teachers, including Muḥammad ibn Ahmad ibn Hamzah al-Ramli (Shams al-Ramli) and Nur al-Din ʿAli ibn Ghanim al-Maqdisi, establishing himself as one of the foremost Sunni scholars of his era.


Al-Munawi's scholarly contributions were vast and influential, particularly in the field of hadith, where he authored Fayḍ al-Qadir, a multi-volume commentary on Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti's al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir, which became a standard reference for verifying prophetic traditions. Among his other notable works are al-Taysir fi Sharḥ al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir, al-Fatḥ al-Samawi, Kunuz al-Ḥaqa'iq, and al-Ithaf al-Sunniyyah bi-Ahadith al-Qudsiyyah, reflecting his expertise in fiqh, Arabic grammar, and Sufi exegesis. He also produced commentaries on texts like al-Tirmidhi's al-Shamaʾil, engaging in theological debates on divine attributes and prophetic visions while critiquing figures such as Ibn Taymiyyah as innovators.


Renowned for his asceticism and piety, al-Munawi adhered to a rigorous spiritual routine, including daily recitations of remembrances (adhkar) and consuming only one meal per day, which earned him admiration among contemporaries. He taught at al-Azhar Mosque and mentored students like ʿAli al-Ajhuri and his own son Zayn al-ʿabidin, who memorised the Qurʾan at age seven, perpetuating his legacy in Cairo's intellectual circles until his death in 1031 AH, with his funeral prayer led at al-Azhar.
