About the Author :

He is Imam Al-Hafiz Shams al-Din Muhammad bin 'Ali ibn Tulun al-Hanafi ad-Dimashqi, rahmatullahi ta'ala 'alayhi. Ibn Tulun was an acclaimed Damascene historian, who left behind a huge amount of works in many sciences, from history to hadith, from theology to the Propehtic biography.

Born in 880h/1475CE in the Damascus suburb of al-Salihiyya to an Arab Muslim father and an Anatolian mother, Ibn Tulun was chiefly raised by his father and uncle, Jamal al-Din Yusuf b. Tulun, as his mother had died before he even learned to walk. As a young adult he showed tremendous intellectual promise, eventually studying with a host of shaykhs, although he credited three specific scholars as having been of major academic influence :

---Nasir al-Din Muhammad Ibn Zurayq (d. 900/1495),
---Yusuf b. 'Abd al-Hadi (d. 909/1503), and
---'Abd al-Qadir al-Nu'aymi (d. 927/1521).

By his own count Ibn Tulun wrote 762 works, including biographical dictionaries, topographies of Damascus and its environs, theological works, and historical chronicles; their titles are contained in his autobiography al-Fulk al-mashhun.
