About the Author :
He is Shaykh Mustafa Ahmad al-Zarqa,
may Allah have mercy upon him, - one of the most distinguished Islamic scholars and jurists of the 20th century, was born in an illustrious family of scholars and jurists in
Halab (Aleppo), Syria in 1904. His father, Shaykh Ahmad al-Zarqa, and his grandfather, Shaykh Muhammad al-Zarqa, were eminent jurists.
Shaykh Ahmad al-Zarqa wrote a treatise
Sharh al-qawaid al-fiqhiyyah, which deals with the methodological principles of Islamic jurisprudence. His best known work is
Al-madkhal al-fiqhi al-aam, which was first published in 3 volumes in 1953 and has been reprinted more than 10 times. The 1967 edition was printed with a slightly modified title as
Al-fiqh al-Islami fi thawbihi al-jadid.
Al-Madkhal provides a general but authoritative and lucid introduction to the principles and methodology of Islamic law. It is a prescribed text in courses on Islamic jurisprudence in several universities around the world.
