Description :
Sunan al-Tirmidhi or
Jami` al-Tirmidhi (Arabic: جامع الترمذي), popularly also referred and known as
al-Jami al-Kabir [Tirmithi / Tirmizi) (Arabic: سُـنَن الترمذي), is one of
the
Sunni Six major
Hadith collections, forming part of the
Sihah Sitta.
It was
collected by Imam Abu 'Isa Muhammad ibn 'Isa al-Tirmidhi, (209 - 279
H),
may Allah be pleased wih him.
Al-Hafidh Abu Al-Fadl Al-Maqdisi said: "I heard Al-Imam Abu Isma'il
Abdullah bin Muhammad Al-Ansari in Harrah - when Abu Isa Al-Tirmidhi and
his book was mentioned before him - saying:
" To me, his book is more
useful than the books of Al-Bukhari
and that of Al-Muslim. This is because
only an expert can arrive
at the benefit of the books of Al-Bukhari and
Al-Muslim,
whereas in the case of the book of Abu Isa, every one of the
people can attain its benefit."
The muhaddith Imam ibn al-Athir, alayhi ar-Rahman, says in his Jami’ al-Usul,
“Tirmidhi’s work is the finest, most beneficial, least repetitive and
has the best arrangement. It also stands out by mentioning the different
opinions and ijtihad [of the jurists], and clarifying the different
types of hadith authentication, i.e. sahih, hasan, gharib. It also has
some aspects of critical analysis of narrators.”
Imam Shah Abd al-Aziz Muhaddith al-Dehlawi,
alayhi ar-Rahman, says in his
Bustan al-Muhaddithin, “The
Al-Jami’ of Imam Tirmidhi is the finest from amongst the books of hadith due to many reasons.
