Kitab Al-Tabaqat Al-Kubra is a compendium of biographical information about famous Islamic personalities compiled by the famous historian and biographer Muhammad ibn Sa'ad al-Waqidi, rahimaullah.
This 6 volume work commences from the life of Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ, his Companions and Helpers, including those who fought at the Battle of Badr as a special class, and of the following generation; the taba'in and their Followers (taba-taba'in), who received their traditions from the Companions.
Abu 'Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Sa'd, 'alayhir rahman, is one of the greatest authorities on Muslim biography. His collection, the Kitab at-Tabaqat al-Kabir, is one of the most important inand earliest surviving biographical collections of narrations. Ibn Sa'd, may Allah be pleased with him,
was born in 148H / 764CE in Basra, and died in 230 / 845. He moved to
Baghdad where he studied under various people, especially Muhammad ibn
'Umar al-Waqidi. He also visited Kufa and Madina al-Munawwarah in the course of his
quest for knowledge. Many authorities have testified to his reliability.
