This book introduces some of the key theological debates within the early Muslim intellectual community that have relevance and has as much intensity today as they did historically. The causes and presuppositions surrounding the controversies are outlined and given focus with ample textual examples from the formative period of Islam. The notes are marginally referenced and are terse in many places assuming some prior familiarity with the literature gained from reading during the term. The book serves as primary reading material for the lectures and so all references ought to be followed up in discussions whether in class or in separate study circles.
This is Volume I in the 'Introducing Theology Series.'
