Description :
Iqamat al-Hujjah 'ala ann al-Ikthar fi al-ta'abbud laysa bi Bid'at - Shaykh Abd al-Hayy al-Lacknawi,
rahmatullahi ta'ala 'alayhi, gives a comprehensive and detailed analysis on the definition of
Bid'ah.
Based upon the Qur'an and
Sunnah - Shaykh al-Lacknawi definines what would be regarded as a reprehensible and non-reprehensible
bid'ah in Islam. Using this definition the shaykh moves onto the question; "Is exertion in worship a
bid'ah, such as remaining awake the entire night engaged in prayers or completing the whole Qur'an in a single
rak'ah?" By presenting a deluge of narrations illustrating the wonderful exertion of the
Salaf, Shaykh Abd al-Hayy, in a scholarly manner also puts this question into its proper context.
Imam 'Abd al-Hayy al-Lacknawi [1264 - 1304 after Hijri] He
is 'Abu l-Hasanat 'Abd al-Hayy bin Muhammad 'Abd al-Haleem al-Ansari
al-Lakhnawi (1264-1304 AH / 1848-1887 CE). He was the author of many
famous works and a renowned scholar of his time. He was born in Banda,
India and was a descendend from the
Sahabah - Sayyidina Abu Ayyub al-Ansari,
radi Allahu ta'ala anhu.
His predecessors emigrated from Madinah Munawwarah to Hirat, then to
Lahore, Delhi and finally to Sihala and Firangi Mahal near Lucknow.
Imam
'Abd al-Hayy memorised the Noble Qur'an at the age of ten. He studied
some Persian books under his learned father and continued learning many
sciences, so much so that he began teaching many of the books he had
learnt himself under various scholars. The Mufti of Makkah, Shaykh Ahmad
ibn Zain Dahlan,
rahmatullahi ta'ala 'alayhi, granted him permission for all
isnad (chain of narration) from Al-Hidayah of Marghinanai as well as what he had learnt from all his teachers.
He passed away in
Rabi ul Awwal 1304h. at the young age of 39 and was buried in the graveyard of his ancestors.
