The Mustadrak ala al-Sahihayn or Al-Mustadrak al-Hakim is the famous collection of almost 9000 hadith compiled by the muhaddith Imam Hafiz Hakim al-Nishapuri [d.405h], may Allah have mercy upon him.
Al-Hakim Nisapuri gained a substantial reputation for writing Al-Mustadrak 'Ala al-Sahihayn. He had commenced writing al-Mustadrak when he was 72 years old. He is quoted to have said : '' I drank water from Zamzam and asked Allah for excellence in writing books.''
After his death, one of al-Hakim's students, Al-Hasan ibn Ash'ath al-Qurashi, said: 'I saw al-Hakim in my dream riding a horse in a handsome appearance and saying : 'Salvation.' I asked him: Al-Hakim! In what?' He replied: 'Writing hadith.
Shah Waliullah Muhaddith ad-Dehlawi, may Allah have mercy upon him, a 18th century scholar stated :
A mujaddid (Reviver) appears at the end of every century : The mujaddid of the 1st century was Imam of Ahl al-Sunnah; Umar bin 'Abdul 'Aziz. The mujaddid of the 2nd century was Imam of Ahl al-Sunnah Muhammad Idris al-Shafi'i. The mujaddid of the 3rd century was Imam of Ahl al-Sunnah Abu'l Hasan Ash'ari. The mujaddid of the 4th century was Abu Abdullah Hakim Nisapuri, may Allah have mercy upon them all.
Abu Abd-Allah Muhammad ibn Abd-Allah al-Hakim al-Nisapuri (d. 403 AH) ,
and also known as Ibn Al-Baiyi, was a Sunni scholar and the leading
traditionalist of his age, frequently referred to as the 'Imam of the
Muhaddithin' or the 'Muhaddith of Khurasan.' Al-Hakim, who hailed from
Nisapuri, had vast amounts of teachers in Khurasan, Iraq, Transoxiana
and elsewhere. He had scores of notable students, including Imam
al-Bayhaqi, rahmatullahi ta'ala 'alayhi, who was a scholarly giant in his own right.
