Description :

The full title of ''Siraaj Al-Awarif fil-Wasaya wa al-Maarif'' - 'The Lamp of Mystic Knowledge to Comprehend the Mystic Way of Life and Counsel' was first published in 1313 A.H.  The author of this book, Hadrat Sayyid Shah Abul Husain Ahmad-e-Noori, alaihir rahmah, who was born in 1255 A.H., belonged to the famous chain of mystics of Khanqah-e-Barkatiya of Marehra Shareef.

The present book, which was originally written in Persian has tremendous merits, the most outstanding being the selection of themes with careful precision. Two previous translations of Siraj al-Awarif have appeared in Urdu ; the first translation was done by Hadrat Mawlana Mufti Khalil Ahmad Khan Sahib Barkati, alaihi ar-rahmah of Marehra and the second by Dr. Sayyid Shah Muhammad Amin Mia. The language of the latter is more simple and fluent as compared to the first translation.

The book is divided into seven sections and each section has been called 'Lustres' (source of light or lustre). Each Lustre is further sub-divided into several 'Noor' (Light) explaining different subjects.

--- About the Translator

Shaykh 'Abd al-Hadi al-Qadiri al-Ridawi
al-Shafi'i, was born in the 14th of Muharram 1371 Hijri (22nd September 1953) into a Noble family whose roots were deep in tasawwuf. His grandfather, Shaykh Muhammad Husain Chishti-Nizami, rahmatullahi 'alayhi, (d.1339/1922) was a devout murid and servant of his Murshid-e-Kamil, the Qutb, Hadrat Shah Ghulam Muhammad Sufi Siddiqui al-Qadiri, Chishti-Nizami Habibi, rahmatullahi 'alayhi, (D.1329/1911) - compassionately known as Hadrat Sufi Sahib. He was brought by his Murshid to South Africa in the late 1800's.

Shaykh 'Abd al-Hadi was greatly influenced by his father, Shaykh 'Abd al-Wahhab Chishti-Nizami, rahmatullahi 'alayhi, (d.1401/1981), from a young age and hence, in 1969 left S.Africa to study Din in Bareilly Sharif, India. In 1971 he accompanied the Sufi Master, Mufti Azam-e-Hind, Imam Mustapha Rida al-Qadiri, al-Nuri, rahmatullahi 'alayhi, as his khadim for the Hajj pilgrimage. It was during this blessed trip that Shaykh Abd al-Hadi became a murid and honoured with the wikalat of Mufti Azam-e-Hind.  In 1976 he was entrusted with the khilafat of the Qadiriyyah Barkatiyya Silsila and the following year the ijazah of Hadith Silsalatuz Zahb.

The shaykh graduated from Jamia Radawiyyah 'Manazar e Islam' in Bareilly sharif in 1978 and finally returned to South Africa. The shaykh was appointed in charge of several institutions and served as Imam across many Masjids. It was in 1986 he founded the hugely influential Imam Ahmad Raza Academy in Durban, South Africa. He received ijazah to narrate Hadith sharif from Sayyid Shaykh Muhammad 'Alawi Maliki al-Hasani, rahmatullahi 'alayhi in 1990, and in 1997 was bestowed khilafat of the Qadiriyyah Barkatiyya Silsila this time by Sayyid  Shah Ale-Rasul Hasnayn Barkati, Sajjadah of the Khanqah-e-Barkatiyyah, Marehra sharif, India. The shaykh continues to receive numerous other khilafats and ijazahs as well as many blessed and rare sacred relics, books and manuscripts from illustrious mashaykh and sufi masters from across the middle-east and Asia.

The shaykh has translated, written and published more than 70 books on various subjects in English and is still devoutly striving to publish more books for the benefit of the Muslim Ummah. The shaykh conducts weekly classes at the Imam Ahmad Raza Academy and also leads the Hadrah-e-Qadiriyyah (dhikr) on a weekly basis too. He is the Founder and President of the Imam Ahmad Raza Academy, Director of Barkatur-Raza Publications and the recently (2012) launced publishing house Sufi Pages.
