Description :

The literal meaning of Bidat (innovation) is a new thing. The Holy Qur'an states; ''Say, I am not a new Rasul, the Creator of the Heavens and Earth'' ... The literal meaning has been used in these verses (i.e. to create, to make new, etc). The great Hanafi Imam, Mulla Ali Qari, rahmatullahi 'alayhi, ''Bidat is the action which has no past example.'' ---Mirqaat Sharh Mishkaat, Baabul-Itisaam bil-Kitab was Sunnah.

It is now used in three meanings;

---[1]. A new action that came to be after the Beloved Prophet, Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam.
---[2]. An action against the Sunnat which removes the Sunnat.
---[3]. Bad or false beliefs (aqaaid) that came to be afterwards.

The first meaning of bidat is divided into two categories;

     a]. Bidah Hasana : Good Innovation
     b]. Bidah Sayyia : Bad Innovation

The second and third meanings of innovation refer only to a bad innovation. The second meaning was meant by the pious when they said. ''Every Innovation is bad (sayyia).'' The third meaning is derived from the hadith '' Every innovation is a deviance.'' Thus, the ahadith and rulings of the ulama (scholars) are not in conflict.
