Awarif-ul-Ma'arif is is one of the oldest and most authentic books on
tasawwuf (sufism). It is a manual for daily study and practice written by the the renowned thirteenth-century Sufi thinker, Shaykh 'Abu Hafs Umar al-Suhrawardi.
The treatise recognises the primary importance of the Qur'an and the
Hadith, and functions as a medium of interpretation for the primary texts.
The aim of the treatise is to assist the daily spiritual exercises and general intellectual development of the Suhrawardiyya members; it makes use of Qur'anic hermeneutics, hadith commentary, rational arguments on epistemology, as well as discussing different levels of spirituality and proper manners. It also includes some critique of others orders and their interpretations of tasawwuf. In very many, if not all, of his arguments, Suhrawardi relies for authority upon hadith's, his own intimacy with the Prophet's, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, way of life.

About the Author :
He is al-Shaykh Shahab al-Din Abu Hafs 'Umar al-Suhrawardi, rahmatullahi ta'ala 'alayhi, (c.1145-1234). He was a Persian Sufi and nephew of Shaykh Abu al-Najib al-Suhrawardi. Shahab al-Din al-Suhrawardi expanded the tariqah of Suhrawardiyya that had been created by his uncle Abu al-Najib Suhrawardi, and is the person responsible for officially formalisng the sufi tariqah.
Shaykh Shahab al-Din al-Suhrawardi traces his lineage back to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, radi Allahu ta'ala anhu, the first Caliph. From an early age onwards, Shihab al-Din Suhrawardi studied fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), shari'ah, mantiq, kalam, Qur'anic studies and Hadith studies. Shihab al-Din al-Suhrawardi quickly excelled in his studies and mastered, at an early age, the Shafi'i and Hanbali madhhabs. One of his most notable teachers was the famous Sufi, Ghawth al-A'zam, Sayyiduna Abdul Qadir Jilani, radi Allahu ta'ala anhu. Shihab al-Din al-Suhrawardi was eventually designated as 'Shaykh al-Islam' by al-Nasir under the Abbasids dynasty.
Shihab al-Din al-Suhrawardi is the author of the Awarif ul-Maarif, which is recognised as a masterpiece, in the field of Tasawwuf.
