About Imam at-Tirmidhi
He is Imam al-Hafidh Muhammad bin 'Isa bin Thawra bin Musa bin al-Dahhak al-Tirmidhi, radi Allahu ta'ala anhu. His kunya (honorific name) was Abu 'Isa but most widely known as Imam Tirmidhi. He was born in the year 209 A.H and passed away in Rajab 279 A.H. at the age of seventy.
He was the compiler of al-Jami` at-Tirmidhi which is among the six authentic books of hadith. Al-Jami` at-Tirmidhi has been categorised as fifth amongst the six most authentic books of hadith. According to the most preferred opinion, al-Bukhari enjoys the highest status, followed by al-Muslim, Abu Dawood, an-Nasai, at-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah respectively, however some scholar differ on this categorisation, (Haji Khalifa in al-Kashf al-Dhunoon has categorised al-Tirmidhi in third position. Some scholar's do include the Muwatta of Imam Malik in this list after al-Bukhari and al-Muslim).
About Imam al-Bajuri :
He is Ibrahim b. Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Bajuri or al-Bayjuri, rahmatullahi ta'ala 'alayhi, - [which is an ascription to a village nearby Cairo named al-Bajar ] - was noted as the 'Shaykh of Islam' and the Shaykh of al-Azhar University. He was born 1198 hijri / 1784CE and lived in Gaza during the French occupation when Napoleon entered Cairo. In the year 1216 hijri / 1801CE, he returned to Cairo and began studying in Azhar University and gained popularity due to his immense knowledge. He began teaching in al-Azhar in Shaban of 1263 hijri / 1801CE and continued teaching until he passed away in Dhul- Hijjah of 1277 hijri / 1861CE.
Imam al-Bajuri was the shaykh of the shafi'is in his day and has written the best explanation of one of the most studied books in the Shafi'i school of thought, namely the Matn Abi Shuja'. He named it al-Iqna' Sharh Matn Abi Shuja'. Al-Bajuris literary output further illuminates the contours and textures of the archetypal scholar. He wrote on the core sciences, fiqh, usul al-din, and tasawwuf as well as their ancillary and supporting sciences.
