The work is a collective tafsir, very rich in content, and a major source for academic research and historical inquiry.

In this tafsir, Imam Tabari has relied on ahadith, including narrations and comments of the sahabah and tabi'in where necessary. Imam Tabari supplies the chain of narrations for the reports included in the commentary, sometimes elaborating on the trustworthiness of narrators.
