Description :

'The Creed of Imam al-Bayhaqi' is an abridged translation of Al-Itiqad wal-Hidayah ila sabil al Rashad, togther with Saeed Fodehs' synopsis of Imam al-Bayhaqi's text.

Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, says in the Qur'an, "Say we believe in Allah and what has been sent down to us." Therefore it is understood by the scholars of Islam that the first obligation for a responsible adult is to know Allah. Abu Dawud narrates in his Sunan, that the Messenger of Allah, ?, said, "The Jews split into 71 or 72 sects; and my community will split into 73 sects."

Consequently, the Muslim community has diligently strived to preserve the correct theology of Islam, and this translated work is one exposition of the Sunni creed.

The author describes this treatise as a work on the subject of what the morally responsible needs to know concerning the foundations of knowledge and its derivatives... along with pointing out some of its evidence in a concise manner. So the work covers essential tenets of faith concerning Allah the Almighty, His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, the beatific vision of Allah in the Hereafter, predetermination, the natural predisposition to Islam, His Angels and Books, the punishment in the grave, the Resurrection, Paradise and Hell, the law of obeying rulers, the Caliphates of Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali, the Prophets Family (Ahl al-Bayt), the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them all, miracles of the Saints (Awliya-Allah) and so on.

Imam al-Bayhaqi :

He is Ahmad ibn al-Husayn ibn 'Ali ibn Abd Allah ibn Musa, Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi al-Naysaburi al-Khusrawjirdi al-Shafi`i al-Ash'ari, (384 - 458 H) may Allah be pleased with him, the jurisprudent Imam, hadith master, authority in the foundations of doctrine (usul), scrupulous and devoted ascetic, defender of the School both in its foundations and its branches.

Imam al-Bayhaqi took fiqh from the Imam Abu al-Fath Nasir ibn al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Naysaburi, among others. He took kalam (speculative theology) from the two Ash'ari Imams Ibn Furak and Abu Mansur al-Baghdadi, the third generation of Ash'ari's students. He took hadith from al-Hakim and was his foremost pupil al-Sayyid Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Dawud al-Naysaburi al-Hasib, Imam of Khurasan's hadith scholars and others of renown.

Imam al-Dhahabi, may Allah be pleased with him, said of the Imam, "His sphere in hadith is not large, but Allah blessed him in his narrations for the excellence of his method in them and his sagacity and expertise in the subject-matters and narrators."
