Description :
This book is a letter between a Muslim grandchild to her war hero great-grandpa to reassure him that his story, his bravery, and his memory have not been forgotten.
Maidah Ahmad has touched on an oftenforgotten part of 20th Century history — the significant contribution made by Indians and Muslims to the Allied cause in the First World War. This rich contribution to children’s literature is written like a letter from the point of view of a girl who’s great-grandfather enlisted to fight in the conflict.
“I could not find a single book detailing the massive efforts made by Muslims or Indians,”
---Maidah Ahmad.
She asks a series of questions to him about what it was like to say goodbye to his family, travel thousands of miles by boat, serve alongside men who spoke an unfamiliar language, prepare meals and comply with religious observances on the battlefield.
“All children need to learn a more accurate history. The book also attempts to create a sense of pride within Muslim youth, for them to learn of their ancestors' contributions and to make them feel valued. It boggles my mind that we are not teaching this in schools. As a society, we are not aware of who was actually fighting for our freedom and democracy.”
More than 2.5 million Muslim soldiers and labourers contributed to the Allied effort. A total of 1.3 million Indians served in the war, of which at least 400,000 were Muslims. Three Muslims were awarded the British Victoria Cross for exceptional service and bravery.
I Remember ... 'A Recognition of Muslim Loyalty & Sacrifice in WWI.' Through the eyes of an innocent child we are reminded that, despite all our differences, people from across the world have a shared history and there are more ties that bind us together than separate us. The book is illustrated with a traditional feel using crayon and pencil-crayon drawings by Kristina Swarner. At the back of the book, there are two pages of facts about the Muslim role in the war and a glossary of Islamic and Indian terms.
