Description :

The Book : Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (1856—1921CE), the leader of the twentieth-century Barelwi's, was a scholar of Islamic law and a Sufi mystic in British India. His vision of what it meant to be a good Muslim was built on devotion to the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and to following the Prophetic sunnah (tradition) as he interpreted it. The Barelwi movement continues to attract a large following both in South Asia and wherever South Asian Muslims have migrated, particularly in Britain.

This book examines the life and thought of Ahmad Riza Khan, may Allah be pleased with him, in the context of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century British Indian history, and assesses his impact on contemporary reformist Muslim movements. Accessible yet authoritative, it features a glossary, chronology and guide to further reading, and will prove an indispensable resource for readers of all backgrounds.

The Author: Dr. Usha Sanyal, Ph.D.History (1990) Columbia University, is a scholar and historian specialising in Asia. Her dissertation concerned the Islamic legal scholar Ahmed Rida Khan Barelwi. Later published in book form, it is often cited by historians writing about India and Islam.
