Description :

'Healing Body and Soul' is a practical self-help book holding advices that can be easily implemented and integrated into your everyday life for gradually achieving a healthy and happy lifestyle that (most importantly) conforms to Islamic teachings.

Our dear Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, says: "I left among you what if you hold on to, you will never go astray, the book of Allah and my Sunnah (life practice)." This does not apply only to acts of worship (‘ibâdât), for Islam covers all aspects of life. The well-being of the whole person—emotionally, physically, spiritually and mentally—is necessary for the believer to participate fully in life, fulfilling his or her duty towards Allah and towards society.

During the course of the book, I try to explain how you can combine the rich tradition of Islamic teaching with beneficial contemporary scientific knowledge in order to lead a holistically healthy and happy life.

Unlike conventional medicine, holistic or alternative therapy does not concentrate solely on the physical body. It views the human being as a combination of five 'bodies': Physical, Biochemical, Intellectual, Emotional, and Spiritual. Hence, this book is divided into five chapters, each concerning one of our five human 'bodies', clarifying in each chapter how to look after that body and keep it healthy. During the course of the book, you will notice how these bodies are interconnected; the health of one is highly dependent on the well-being of the others, so that a happy, healthy life entails a balance between all of them.

Chapter [1]. The Physical Body :

Our Physical Body includes the muscle and bone structures, in addition to different functional systems and body organs. Prophet Muhammad,  may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "The strong believer is more loved by Allah than the weak one, and there is benefaction in both."

Starting with two important rules, cleanliness and no harm, this chapter discusses the Islamic teachings regarding the health of some important body systems (Respiratory, cardiovascular, skin, immune, musculoskeletal, and reproductive systems).

Chapter [2]. The Biochemical Body :

The Biochemical Body is concerned with all the chemical compounds and reactions that occur inside the organism, including its nutrition, the enzymes and hormones that are synthesized and also its surrounding environment.

This chapter is divided into two sections; the first one discusses healthy nutrition and Islamic eating habits starting with our most important rule, these holy words:

'And eat and drink but do not waste by extravagance,
certainly He (Allah) does not like those who waste by
                      extravagance.
' (Qur'an 7:31).

Then, going in details through different items of our everyday food (grains and cereals, vegetables, herbs, fruits, proteins, dairy, fats and sweets, and water); combining valuable scientific researches with the rich Islamic teachings, giving practical advices and clearing some common misconceptions.

The second section of the chapter discusses the Islamic recommendations for environmental protection, including the protection of plants, animals, water resources, and home environment.

Chapter [3]. The Intellectual Body :

Our Intellectual Body is concerned with our mind, the centre of thoughts and the driving force of human action and behaviour.

This chapter discusses the importance of our intellectual abilities and stresses the value of life long learning. It introduces nine ways to keep your brain healthy, and then further gives ten simple nutritional advices for optimal brain performance.

The second part of this chapter deals with the subconscious mind and NLP (NeuroLinguistic Programming). It discusses the power of subconscious suggestions; and then gives practical examples and easy to follow exercises using our daily Divine Remembrances (dhikr-Allah) for reprogramming our mind and altering our behaviour.

Chapter [4]. The Emotional Body :

Our Emotional Body is concerned with our psychological state, responses to stress, feelings and interaction with other human beings.

This chapter is also divided into two main sections. The first one discusses the sources of stress and its effect on our health and well being; then it addresses the true meaning of happiness from an Islamic point of view and gives twenty tips for bringing happiness into your life.

The second part of the chapter sheds light on the importance of social life for a healthy Muslim Ummah and discusses ways to improve social interconnection.

Chapter [5]. The Spiritual Body :

Last but not least, we definitely cannot enjoy healthy lives without a strong, positive connection with our Almighty Creator, Allah.

The soul or the higher self is the part we usually neglect in our daily routine. This is the body which connects us with our Almighty Creator and which acquires its driving energy directly from this sacred connection.

This chapter deals with some of the main Muslims’ acts of worship (Ṣalât or Prayer, Hajj or pilgrimage, meditation and dhikr Allah, fasting, Zakât or charity, Du‘â’ or Supplication, and Qur’an recitation). It shows how these practices are restorative of one’s exhausted soul. They are the curative prescription for modern society’s ailments like misery, depression, stress and loneliness; they are our bridge to Allah.
