Description :

Dictionary of Islam : This rare publication is reprint of the 1885 classic of Dr. Thomas Patrick Hughes.  It has been compiled with a view to give a concise account of the doctrines, rites, ceremonies and customs of the Muslim religion together with the technical and theological terms. It is the only comprehensive Dictionary currently available.

Kazi Publications (Chicago) has reprinted this 19th century Dictionary of Islam with the author's Preface for it's readers because of the comprehensiveness and scope of the work. No similar work of this kind has been done over a hundred years later. We do not agree with all of the entries or descriptions but felt that the knowledge should be made available to all to read and then decide for themselves which descriptions are accurate of Muslim life and belief.

*** Compiled with an Ahl al-Sunnah perspective,
*** Ideal for study, reference and research,
*** Listing in English with Arabic text,
*** Index of words also included, see images below.

Extract from the Preface :

The increased interest manifested in relation to all matters affecting the East, and the great attention now given to the study of comparative religion, seem to indicate that the time has come when an attempt should be made to place before the English speaking people of the world a systematic exposition of the doctrines of the Muslim Faith. This present work is intended to supply this want, by giving, in a tabulated form, a concise account of the doctrines, rites, ceremonies, technical and theological terms.

The Dictionary is for the most part an exposition of the opinions of the Ahl al-Sunnah, with explanations of the chief points on which the Shi'ah and Wahhabi schools of thought differ from it.

The present book does not profess to be a Biographical Dictionary but short biographical notices of persons connected with the early history of Islam have been given, in as much as many of these persons are connected with religious dogmas and ceremonies; the martydom of Husayn, may Allah be pleased with him, for instance, as being the foundation of the Muharram ceremonies; Abu Hanifah, may Allah be pleased with him, as connected with a school of jurisprudence, and the Khalifah 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, as the founder of the religious and political power of Islam.
