Details: A Literary History of the Arabs,
Hardback - 536 pages,
by Prof. R.A.Nicholson.

Description :

The Arabs during a thousand years or more produced one of the richest and most extensive literatures of the world, embracing fine poetry (of the fierce desert life equally with the sophistication of royal courts), belles lettres (learned essays, satires, de arte amoris), religious, mystical and philosophical writings, and huge compendia of history, biography and geography.

For sixty years, the best account in English of this vast output has been, by universal consent, R. A. Nicholson's 'A Literary History of the Arabs' - its supremacy will long remain unchallenged. That it is a book full of erudition and high critical judgement goes without saying; its author is also a poet-translator of rare excellence.

Contents :

---Chapter. I: Saba and Himyar,
---Chapter. II: The History and Legends of the Pagan Arabs,
---Chapter. III: Pre-Islamic Poetry, Manners, and Religion,
---Chapter. IV: The Prophet and the Qur'an,
---Chapter. V: The Orthodox Caliphate and the Umayyad Dynasty,
---Chapter. VI: The Caliphs of Baghdad,
---Chapter. VII: Poetry, Literature, and Science in the Abbasid Period,
---Chapter. VIII: Orthodoxy, Free-Thought, and Mysticism (Sufism),
---Chapter. IX: The Arabs in Europe,
---Chapter. X: From the Mongol Invasion to the Present Day,

Prof. Reynold Alleyne Nicholson, or R. A. Nicholson (August 18, 1868 August 27, 1945), was an eminent English orientalist, scholar of both Islamic literature and Islamic mysticism, and widely regarded as one of the greatest Rumi scholars and translators in the English language.

The author is also the translator of Shaykh Data Ali al-Hijweri's, may Allah be pleased with him, Revelation of the Unveiled, (Kashful Mahjub).
