From the most noble of sciences is the science of Hadith. It is the key to unlock the Sunna of the Prophet, ﷺ, through his words, actions, qualities and tacit approvals. Allah says: “Follow him so that you may be guided.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “May Allah illuminate the one who hears my speech, understands it and conveys it.”

For this reason, the scholars of Hadith have spared no effort to establish the principles by which to verify narrations and deduce—with the utmost precision—what can and cannot be attributed to the guide of mankind ﷺ. Facilitating this quest for the beginning student, the erudite Imam ʿUmar al-Bayquni al-Dimashqi (d. 1080 H.) succinctly defined thirty-four categories of Hadith in his famous thirty-four verses of poetry.

Numerous commentaries upon this treatise followed, of which one of the most sought after in recent times is the masterpiece we have before us, written by the master [hafiz] of Hadith and exegete of the Qurʾan, Imam ʿAbdallah Sirajuddin al-Husayni. In his unique and eloquent style, the saintly Imam takes the reader on an illuminating path of learning, guiding him towards the guidance of the most beloved ﷺ.

About the Author :

He is Imam ʿAbdallah b. Muḥammad Najīb Sirājuddīn al-Ḥalabī al-Ḥusaynī, rahimahullah, and is one of greatest scholars that the Syrian city of Aleppo—known in  the Levant as “the city of scholars”—has ever known. He was a true friend of Allah Almighty, an extraordinary saint who dedicated his entire life to the service of Islam. His qualities were many and his skills outstanding.

Imam ʿAbdallah, known as “the Light of Aleppo,” was a renowned spiritual master of the Rifāʿī path, an expert in Ḥanafī jurisprudence, a ḥāfiẓ and brilliant exegete of the Qurʾan, as well as a scholar and ḥāfiẓ of Hadith, having memorised more than one hundred thousand traditions. He was most famous, however, for his immense and intense love for our master Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah.

Imam ʿAbdallah wrote more than thirty books dealing with Islamic spirituality, creed, ethics, and the noble manners of the Messenger of Allah, the sciences of Hadith and exegesis of the Qurʾan. One of his famous works is the book of which we have the translation before us today: An Explanation of the Bayqūnī Poem in Hadith Terminology.

Imam ʿAbdallah’s students were numerous, many of them becoming prominent scholars themselves, such as his son Shaykh Aḥmad Sirājuddīn, his nephew and son-in-law Shaykh Nūr al-Dīn ʿItr,  Shaykh Sāmir  al-Nass, Shaykh Muḥammad ʿAwwāma  and Shaykh Muḥammadal-Nīnowy, may Allah preserve them.

Following a surgical operation carried out towards the end of his  life, the health of Imam ʿAbdallah deteriorated. On the 4th of March 2002 CE [1422 H.] he returned to his Lord. The news of his passing was announced throughout the Muslim world and covered it with a veil of sorrow. Imam ʿAbdallah Sirājuddīn al-Ḥusaynī was buried in the Shaʿbāniyya complex, next to the graves of its Ottoman founders.
