Description :
Kitab Asbab al-Nuzul, Reasons & Occasions of Revelation of the Holy Qur'an. This classical work is Imam al-Wahidi’s Asbab an-Nuzul, presented here in English translation with parallel Arabic. Among the most important sources for understanding the Qur’an are the tafsir works, commentaries on the Qur’an, which help to properly explain and contextualise the Revelation.
The Qur’an is the highest code for Muslims in everything relating to their spiritual, religious, ethical, social, and legal matters. One of the sciences of the Qur’an is the “Asbab al-Nuzul”- the occasions, reasons, or causes of revelation. Muslim scholars agree that the revelations of the Qur’an can be divided into two broad types. One type includes passages from the Qur’an which were revealed in response to specific events, incidents or questions put forward to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The second type includes passages which were not a direct response to any historical or social development in the life of the Muslim community.
A thorough understanding and full appreciation of the scope of the first type of passages, therefore, depend on knowing the circumstances, facts and details of the events which occasioned them. Such knowledge is an invaluable tool for grasping the meaning of this type of Qur’anic verse.
About Imam al-Wahidi :
He is Abu'l-Hasan `Ali Ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn `Ali Ibn Mattuyah al-Wahidi al-Mattuwi al-Shafi'i, the author of the celebrated commentaries on the Qur'an. He was also the first master of his time in the sciences of grammar and Qur'anic exegesis. He was born in 398 hijri, in Nishapur.
He was coinsidered an expert in the tafsir (commentary of the Holy Qur'an), Asbab Al-Nuzul Al-Qur'an (Causes of the Revelation of the Noble Qur'an), in Arabic & in History. He also composed a treatise on the motives for which the different portions of the Qur'an were revealed; a work called the Takhbir (Indication), containing an explanation of the (Ninety-Nine) excellent names given to God; a full commentary on the poems of Diwan al-Mutanabbi, surpassing in excellence all the numerous works on the same subject, and containing many curious observations.
Imam al-Wahidi was a student of Imam al-Tha`labi, the author of celebrated commentary of the Qur'an. He learned from him the science of Qur`anic interpretation, and ended by surpassing him. He died of a lingering disease in 486 AH / being 1076 Common Era), at Naysapur.
Imam al-Wahidi said :
'The knowledge about Tafsir of the ayah is not possible
without occupying oneself with their stories and explanation
of (the reasons) for their revelation'.
