Description :

Al-Attariyyya, is the first English translation with explanation of ibn al-Hajib's Al-Kafia by Imam Muhammad Bilal Sadiq al-Qadri al-Attari.

Kafia” is one of the most famous books regarding the subject of Nahw. It has been taught in the Dars-e-Nizami for more than 700 years now. The literal meaning of “Kafia” is “sufficient”, meaning that whoever reads this book properly, this book will be sufficient for him in the field of Nahw. This book is considered one of the hardest books in Dars-e-Nizami because of its complex nature. The author uses brief sentences to explain the concepts, and does not give examples or explanations of any rules. This is why you will see hundreds of commentaries and explanations of this book.

The way this book is taught in traditional Dars-e-Nizami is that the teachers go in great details of each and every sentence. They bring in the counter arguments regarding the rules that the author had laid out, and then they answer it themselves. This is confusing for the beginner students since they do not have much expertise regarding the basic concept itself, so how can they be expected to indulge in debates about these rules? Thus, there is a need to change this style, and make this book easy for the students by summarising the concepts in easy words along with translating the Arabic passages.

To facilitate this process we took on the task to translate and summarise this book in an easy way. You will see the Arabic passages of the actual book in a square, and the explanation underneath it. We tried to separate the chapters according to concepts. We also tried to highlight a few parts and included diagrams so that our readers can visualise these abstract concepts.

Using around 7000 words only, the author has concisely laid out all the rules of Nahw in this book. Through his brief, yet comprehensive writing style, the readers will be able to understand the author’s point. This book has been a reference point in Nahw for many centuries and has been taught in many different universities of the world. As the name suggests, this book will be “sufficient” for a student to master his skills in Nahw. Serving as an encyclopedia of Nahw, Kafia was translated and explained by many scholars into their respective languages. However, even after around 800 years of Kafia, it was neither translated nor explained in the English language. Therefore, to fulfill this need, we took onto the task of translating and explaining it for the students of Arabic language all around the world.
