Description :

The Fars Nama of Ibnu l-Balkhi is a local history and topographical account of Fars, the author's native province, written in the early 5th/12th century at the request of the Saljuq Sultan Muhammad b. Malik Shah.

Compiled primarily on the basis of ibn al-Balkhi's travels around the region, the Fars Nama contains detailed first hand descriptions of contemporary fortresses and antiquities, and of cities such as Shiraz. A section on the ethnography of Fars contains much information on local Kurdish tribes. The work also incorporates useful primary material on pre-Islamic Iran not found in other sources.

This description of the province of Fars, was written around the beginning of the 12th century C.E. The author cites his qualifications for it "I was well acquainted with the present condition of the people of Fars ... being well versed also in the events of their history and exactly acquainted with the story of their kings and rulers."

This is a reprint of the edition first published by the Gibb Memorial Trust in 1962. The introduction is in English and the main text is in Persian (farsi). Click on image below for sample page.

About the Author :

Ibn al-Balkhi : He is the Persian author of the Saldju? period who wrote a local history and topographical account of his native province Fars, the Fars-nama.

Nothing is known of him, or of his name apart from what can be gleaned from his book. What is clear is that his ancestors came from Balkh. His grandfather was mustawfi or accountant for Fars under Berk-Yaru? b. Malik Shah’s governor there, the Atabek Rukn al-Dawla or Nazm al-Dawla Khumartigin, and Ibn al-Balkhi acquired his extensive local knowledge of Fars through accompanying his grandfather in his work and travels.
