'The Sustenenace/Nourishment of the Hearts' - (Qut al-Qulub) : Qut al-Qulub fi Mu'amalat al-Mahbub wa wasf Tariq al-Murid ila Maqam al-Tawhid. This two volume work is possibly the first urdu translation of this famous Arabic work of Imam Abu Talib al-Makki, alayhi ar-Rahman w'al-Ridwan, [d.996 Common Era].

Qut al-Qulub is a systematic exploration of tasawwuf and the ‘knowledge of hearts’. This knowledge, known as Ma'rifa, is accessible through inward and outward deeds of devotion to Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala. Al-Makki uses his intimate knowledge of hadith and the Qur'an to argue that Ma'rifa is the only true form of knowledge available to Muslims.

In this work he interprets the Prophet's, salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam, saying, “The quest for knowledge is a duty,” through the Five Pillars of Islam, as a divine assertion that the sciences of the heart have transcendent value. He outlines at length the elements of a wholly pious life- one informed by the sciences of the heart- and disparages the ‘knowledge of tongues.’

About Abu Talib al-Makki; [d.386_H/996_CE]

He is Muhammad b. 'Ali b. 'Atiyya Abu Talib, and is generally known as al-Makki. He learnt Hadith from 'Ali b. Ahmad al-Masisi, Abu Bakr al-Mufid and others. According to al-Khatib al-Baghdadi; Abu Talib al-Makki was one of the people of Jabal, brought up in Makkah, he entered Basra after the death of Abu 'l-Hasan ibn Salim and became associated with his doctrine. For a while he was known to have preached in Baghdad. He is also known to have authored eight works, on hadith, tasawwuf, tawhid, etc. It was believed he was an ardent admirer of Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal, alayhi Rahman. He passed away in Baghdad in 386 after hijri and is laid to rest in a cemetery in Baghdad.

Little is known about the rest of his life although most of the information available is from an entry in al-Khatib al-Baghdadi's Ta'rikh al-Baghdad.
