He was born [302h.] in the southern Iraqi city of Kufa of Yemeni parents. Al-Mutanabbi showed signs of intelligence and unusual linguistic ability from an early age. Through hardship he decided to earn a living writing poetry, and travelled from city to city to seek recognition until he reached the Royal court of the ruler of Aleppo; Saif al-Dawla where he stayed for nine years. After further travelling from Damascus, Egypt and Iraq, al-Mutanabbi was killed [d.354h] by some wandering bandits.
