Hazrat Mevlana (Mawlana) Jalal ud-Din Rumi al-Balkhi,
rahmatullahi ta'ala 'alayhi, was a 13th century Persian poet, an Islamic dervish and a Sufi mystic.
Mawlana Rumi was already a teacher and a theologian, when in 1244 C.E. he came across a wandering dervish named Shams al-Din of
Tabrez. The meeting proved to be a turning point in his life. Shams and Rumi became very close friends. Rumi expressed his love for Shams and grief at his death through his many works and poems. Mawlana Rumi passed away in 1273 C.E. and is laid to rest at Konya, in Turkey. He is regarded as one of the greatest spiritual masters and poetical intellects.
