Imam al-Haddad [d.1132H]

Imam 'Abdullah ibn 'Alawi al-Haddad 'alayhi ar-Rahman w'al-Ridwan, lived at Tarim in the Hadramawt Valley between Yemen and Oman. He is widely accepted as the mujaddid (or renewer) of the 12th Islamic century. He is a direct descendant of the Beloved Prophet, Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam, through Imam al-Husayn, Radi Allahu ta'ala anhu. His illustrious ancestors, the 'Alawi sayyids, had for centuries produced generation after generation of great scholars, gnostics and summoners to the Straight Path. A celebrated scholar of the Shafi'i School of Jurisprudence, Imam al-Haddad was renowned for the breadth of his knowledge and the profundity of insight. He is also known for compiling litanies of dhikr taken from the Qur'an and the Beloved Prophet, Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam. These litanies are widely practiced all over the world. His influence on the Islamic world is reflected by the fact that his books are still in print and have been translated into many languages. He endeavored to produce concise and clear texts, many of which are abbreviated adaptations of Imam al-Ghazali 'alayhir rahman's monumental work, Revival of the Islamic Sciences (Ihya 'Ulum al-Din). Imam al-Haddad, 'alayhir rahman, passed away in 1132 A.H., after having spent his entire life helping people draw closer to their Lord through the Imam's personal teachings, written works, and his exemplary life. He was buried in a simple grave in a cemetery at Tarim.

Gifts for the Seeker                                     by Imam Abdallah ibn 'Alawi al-Haddad
Paperback - 75 pages                                          Translated from Arabic by Mostafa al-Badawi

Gifts for the Seeker - Ithaf i's sa'il : Revised addition

This book answers many of the questions often asked by seekers of inward illumination.  What are the real implications of the doctrine of divine unity?  How can proper concentration be achieved during spiritual exercises?  When should one avoid participating in Sufi gatherings?  What is the relationship between the tongue, the mind, and the heart?  How is one to understand visions received in sleep?  The work also includes the author’s commentary on a poem on inner wayfaring which speaks of the most exalted stations of the path and goes on to explain a number of paradoxes of the Way, such as the reason as why the saints usually refuse to deploy their miraculous powers, preferring to concentrate on self-scrutiny and the compassionate guidance of others.  These points are illustrated with references to the famous mystical poems of Ibn al-Farid and Abu Madyan.

The Sublime Treasures : Answers to Sufi Questions       Imam Abdallah ibn 'Alawi al-Haddad
Paperback - 234 pages                                           Translated from Arabic by Mostafa al-Badawi

The Sublime Treasures is an important work in the field of Islamic spirituality.

This volume contains Imam Al-Haddad's answers to letters he received posing questions on easily confusing and subtle Sufi matters, presented in Imam Haddad's inimitable style of succinct clarity. Included are questions pertaining exclusively to Sufism, such as those concerning the Pole of Time and the Circle of Saints, the Afrad- who are the solitary saints said by some to be outside the jurisdiction of the Pole and in direct contact with
al-Khidr, the definition of the siddiq, that of the majdhub, the states of extinction and subsistence, various technical points concerning the relationship between the master and the novice, Sufi courtesy with God and His saints, the worlds of Mulk, Malakut, Jabarut, and Lahut, which are the degrees of universal existence, and how to deal with obscure passages in the works of such esoteric writers as Ibn Arabi May Allah be pleased with him. There are also questions of a more general tenor, such as those concerning the degrees of the Garden and its gates, the merits of recitation of the Qur'an over awrad, the respective merits and courtesies of poverty and wealth, and of fame and obscurity, the offering of the rewards of certain acts of worship to the spirits of the dead, sins committed in Ramadan when devils are shackled, and the causes of the civil wars that Ali ibn Abi-Talib May Allah be pleased with him was forced to wage.

It will be noticed how the Imam curtly sweeps aside anything that has no direct bearing on the traveler's path. Questions devoid of practical value are pitilessly dismissed in a summary manner and the reader is firmly reoriented to what is of immediate benefit to him. Sufi masters have always been most reluctant to discourse openly about Divine secrets, knowing that such discourse causes much confusion and frequently leads novices into believing or pretending they have reached that which they have not. The Imam, however, allowed himself more freedom in letters addressed to his scholarly disciples- extracts of which constitute this volume- than in books.

TWO TREATISES : Mutual Reminding & Good Manners
Paperback - 96 pages                  Imam Abdallah ibn 'Alawi al-Haddad    Translated by Mostafa al-Badawi

This volume contains two concise treatises of the venerable Imam al-Haddad. The first treatise, Mutual Reminding, distills the ethic and content of offering good counsel to one another. The chief elements of counsel, says the Imam, are taqwa (an active fear and consciousness of God) and detachment from the material world. These elements connect well with the topic of the second treatise, Good Manners, which discusses the manners recommended of the spiritual wayfarer as he or she takes the path to spiritual felicity.

The author Imam Abdallah Ibn-Alawi Al-Haddad (d.1720 CE), Allah be pleased with him, lived at Tarim in the Hadramaut valley between Yemen and Oman, and is widely held to have been the ‘renewer’ (mujaddid) of the twelfth Islamic century. A direct descendant of the Beloved Prophet Allah bless him and give him peace, his sanctity and direct experience of God are clearly reflected in his writings, which include several books, a collection of Sufi letters, and a volume of mystical poetry. He spent most of his life in Kenya and Saudi Arabia where he taught Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and classical Sufism according to the order (tariqa) of the Ba 'Alawi sayyads.

Mostafa al-Badawi (translator/compiler) of the Fons Vitae Imam al-Haddad Spiritual Masters series is a disciple in the Sufi order of Imam al-Haddad rahmatallahi alayhi. Dr. Mostafa al-Badawi is one of the world's premier translators of Islamic spiritual texts. He is a Consultant Psychiatrist and member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He studied under many shaykhs, foremost among whom is the late Habib Ahmad Mashhur al-Haddad 'alayhir rahman.

83 pages                                 Mostafa al-Badawi (translator); Shaykh Hamza Yusuf (foreword)

Description from the publisher:

Includes original Arabic text, transliteration, and translation.

From the back cover: "Imam Al-Ghazali (may God's mercy be on him) wrote in his book The Beginning of Guidance: "You should not neglect your time or use it haphazardly; on the contrary you should bring yourself to account, structure your litanies and other practices during each day and night, and assign to each period a fixed and specific function. This is how to bring out the spiritual blessing (baraka) in each period. But if you leave yourself adrift, aimlessly wandering as cattle do, not knowing how to occupy yourself at every moment, your time will be lost. It is nothing other than your life, and your life is the capital that you make use of to reach perpetual felicity in the proximity of God the Exalted.

Each of your breaths is a priceless jewel, since each of them is irreplaceable and, one gone, can never be retrieved. Do not be like the deceived fools who are joyous because each day their wealth increases while their life shortens. What good is an increase in wealth when life grows ever shorter? Therefore be joyous only for an increase in knowledge or in good works, for they are your two companions who will accompany you in your grave when your family, wealth, children, and friends stay behind."

Translation of al-Nasâih al-Dîniyyah.

This book is a translation of the blind scholar's text entitled al-Nasâih al-Dîniyyah and contains a foreword by the Imam of the Ba Alawi Mosque, Singapore, al-Habib Hasan al-Attas.

Al-Nasâih al-Dîniyyah is based on the classic work by Imam Al Ghazali’s Ihya Ulum al-Deen [Revival of the Religious Sciences].  It follows the same structure as the Ihya and is written in a simple and accessible format.

Fasting by Imam al-Haddâd -
(A translation of a section of his Nasâih al-Dîniyâh)

The Status of Ramadân

Imam al-Haddâd, may Allah shower him with mercy, said:

Know! O gathering of brothers, may Allah ease us and you towards ease and distance us from difficulty and forgive us in the next world and the first one, that Ramadân is a month of mighty status and rank with Allah and His Messenger, upon him be peace. It is the master of all months. Allah made fasting compulsory for the Muslims and prescribed it for them. The Exalted said:

O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may (learn) self-restraint,- (al-Baqara 2:183)

In it, Allah descended His Book and made the Night of Power, which is better than a thousand months, among its nights. A thousand months is more than eighty years. Count and contemplate what this Night of Power is – a night that Allah has made greater than this long period. And Allah, The Exalted has said:

Ramadân is the (month) in which was sent down the Qurân, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). (al-Baqara 2:185)

The Book of Intentions                     by Habib Muhammad bin 'Alawi al-Aydarus
 Paperback - pages

The Book of Intentions by Habib Muhammad bin 'Alawi al Aydarus presents an array of intentions drawn from the Prophetic Sunnah and the practice of the Salaf (the pious predecessors). It illustrates, in a concise and practical manner, the meaning of the Hadith of his grandfather, "Verily actions are only according to intentions and every man shall have according to what he intended. Whosoever makes hijra (migrates) for Allah and His Envoy, then his hijra is to Allah and His Envoy, and whosoever makes hijra to achieve some wordly benefit or to take a woman in marriage, then his hijra is to that for which he made hijra."

The Salaf used to say, "Whosoever opens the door of a virtuous intention, Allah will open seventy doors of the doors of tawfiq (success) for him." This saying encapsulates the tacit prayer of this book: that one's intention may become a vehicle to tawfiq and a gateway to many more virtuous intentions.

Few works gift such an insight into the multitude of opportunities to realise and harness the latent blessings within the intention.

Habib Muhammad bin 'Alawi al Aydarus, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was born in Tarim in 1351 AH/1932 CE. He has studied under many learned Imams and Shuyukh. He has composed over forty books, and leads and participates in many lessons and gatherings of dhikr. He continues to reside and teach in Tarim, as a beacon of knowledge and a pillar of the community.

The Counsels of Religion                  by Imam Abdallah ibn Alawi al Haddad

Paperback - 276 pages                                            Translated into English by Mostafa al Badawi

The Book of Counsels, the author’s largest work, was declared by Imam al-Haddad,
May Allah be pleased with him, to be easy, clear, intelligible to the reader possessed of understanding, and sufficient.” And that it contained the essence of the Ihya Ulum al-Din,’ Imam al-Ghazali’s, May Allah be pleased with him, famous magnum opus.

----

The contents of the book are in many ways similar to those of the Ihya’, despite the fact that the latter is made of four large volumes. The book opens with a discourse on taqwa or God-fearing, leading up to the role of taqwa in attaining to a good ending to life, which means passing into the next life as a Muslim, thereby making certain of reaching paradise.

As parts of taqwa are discussed such outward endeavors as unity among Muslims, the avoidance of division and discord, and the duty to enjoin good and forbid evil. Taqwa also comprises inward things such as contentment with God and His decrees, avoiding distraction and illusory hopes, fear of God, the remembrance of death, avoiding hoping for forgiveness without working for it, while using predestination as a justification.

The essential role of knowledge in Islam is discussed next, followed by four of the five pillars of Islam. The fifth, which in the usual order comes first, the testimony of La ilaha illa’llah, Muhammadun Rasulu’llah is left till the end, where it is explained as the Creed of Ahl al-Sunna wa’l-Jama‘a.

The four other pillars, the ritual prayer, zakat, fasting, and pilgrimage, are discussed not in regard with their outward legal aspect, but rather their dimension of ihsan, which is what one ought to do and what pitfalls to avoid in order to render the act of worship outwardly and inwardly sound and thus acceptable to God.

Among the most important things which make an act of worship acceptable is the degree to which one’s heart is present with God, and to this and to reciting the Qur’an a chapter is devoted. The eighth and ninth chapters are related, since enjoining good and forbidding evil constitute a major part of Jihad. The tenth relates to the rights and duties of people toward each other, such as the duties of political leaders towards their communities, those of judges, those of children toward their parents, parents toward their children, spouses toward each other, relatives, and other such matters with which those who enjoin good and forbid evil should be well acquainted.

Then come two chapters which in the Ihya’ constitute two of its largest sections and so to speak its heart, “Ruinous Things” which are those deeds, emotions, and characters which ruin one’s heart by darkening it, and “Saving Things” which, being their opposites, lead to the heart’s purification and enlightenment.

Ruinous things include everything that is legally forbidden, as well as the crimes of the tongue and ailments of the heart such as arrogance, resentful envy, avarice, and so on.

Reviews:

"Dr. Badawi was a student of a direct descendent of Shaykh Abd'allah al-Haddad, Habib Ahmad Mashur al-Haddad. Those of us fortunate enough to have known him personally consider him a realized spiritual master and sanctified soul, and none can sanctify save God . . . This book is a compelling testimony to the spiritual power and influence of the sanctified soul on the world. It is perhaps more importantly for us a step toward re-introducing the desperately needed path of sanctification." --- Shaykh Hamza Yusuf

"At a time when the Muslim world is suffering from false teachings being spread by extremists, the message of al-Haddad offers a precious means of return to the high ethical and spiritual standards of classical Islam. The publication of this important book should prove a milestone on the way of furthering that blessed effort." --- T. J. Winter

Habib umar bin hafiz is a descendant (Sayyad) of the Beloved Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, through his grandson Imam Hussain, may Allah be pleased with him. He was born in Tarim, Hadramaut in Yemen, and raised in a household that possessed a tradition and lineage of Islamic scholarship and righteousness, his father being the famous martyr, scholar, and caller to Islam, Al-Habib Muhammad bin Salim.

Having memorized the Qurían at a very early age, Habib Umar also memorized the core texts in fiqh, hadith, Arabic Language, and other religious sciences. He studied many sciences including spirituality from his father Al-Habib Muhammad bin Salim, acquiring from him a deep love and concern for daëwah and religious counsel in the way of Allah. He attended numerous circles of knowledge held by traditional scholars, such as Muhammad bin Alawi bin Shihab and al-Shaikh Fadl Baa Fadl. Later, he enrolled at the Ribat of al-Baydaí, where he began to study the traditional sciences under the expert tutelage of Al-Habib Muhammad bin Abd-Allah al-Haddar, as well as under the Shafi'i jurist and scholar Al-Habib Zain bin Sumait. Habib Umar was given permission to teach soon after.

Afterwards, he began to visit many neighbouring towns and communities across Yemen and studied with the Mufti of Tai'iz, al-Habib Ibrahim bin Aqil bin Yahya, who began to show him much love and attention. He received similar treatment from his Shaikh al-Habib Muhammad al-Haddar, who gave him his daughter's hand in marriage after being impressed by his uprightness and intelligence. Al-Habib Umar then traveled to the Hijaz and studied several books with prominent scholars, including Al-Habib Abdul Qadir bin Ahmad al-Saqqaf, Al-Habib Ahmed Mashur al-Haddad, and Al-Habib Attas al-Habashi.
