Islamic Doctrine & Belief

Due to the fact that every generation witnesses a silent decline in worshippers' knowledge of the fundamental doctrines and beliefs of religion, constant efforts are required to elucidate and preserve the sources of this knowledge and to preserve them in the hearts and minds of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala's servants. The acquisition of knowledge is obligatory for every accountable muslim, for without it the appearance of conjecture and uneducated opinion is inevitable. Therein lies a danger that leads to an erroneous understanding of faith, which if left unchecked, may lead the seeker to a dangerous precipe from which he is unable to escape a serious fall.

The correct understanding of the signs of Allah Almighty, His Angels, His Books, His Prophets, the Day of Judgement, and the Divine Decree saves one from two extremes: denial of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala's attributes, and its opposite anthropomorphism, the relating of of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala's attributes to physical manifestations.

There is no better time than today to introduce these books to those for whom English is the mother tongue, for the subject of aqeeda (belief) has become one of controversy and confusion. These books provide a classical approach to understanding Islamic doctrine, based on some of the most accepted and reliable scholars of Ahl as-Sunnah w'al Jama'ah, the (The People of the Sunnah and the Majority).

Beliefs  -   Aqida Encyclopedia of Islamic Doctrine [Vol 1]

Paperback - 232 pages                                              by Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani

Excerpt Book Description : Have you ever wondered : What are the beliefs and doctrine of mainstream Islam as opposed to those who call themselves ''Salafis'' with regard to the Names and Attributes of Almighty Allah? Read the evidence and decide for yourself.

The author says in the introduction : ''Scholars have observed that the Community's (umma's) greatest achievement over the past millenium has undoubtedly been its internal intellectual cohesion. They point out how from the beginning of the Islamic era to almost the present day, Muslims have maintained an astounding sense of unity despite the clash of the numerous dynasties under which they lived. No major religious hostilities have divided Muslims. At least, this was true until the physical and intellectual assault on Islamic unity initiated by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1703-1792 CE), his immediate successors and by the self-named ''Salafi'' sect of the present day.

One of Ibn Abd al-Wahhabs more enormous stupidities is that when reason contradicts his claims, he casts it aside and gives it no role in his judgement. He endeavours to make people like dumb beasts when it comes to matters of faith. He prohibits the involvement of reason in religious affairs, despite the fact that there is no contradiction between reason and faith. On the contrary, whenever human minds reach their full measure of completeness and perfection, religion's merits and prerogatives with regard to reason become totally manifest.

The author then explains how the beliefs held by the Wahhabi ''Salafi'' as opposed to the beliefs held by mainstream Islam are threatening every Muslim's Islamic heritage He offers this work and its proofs of the real Islam to those who wish to decide for themselves.

The Prophet : Commemorations, Visitation, and His Knowledge of the Unseen

Mawlid, Ziyara and Ilm al-GhaybEncyclopedia of Islamic Doctrine [Vol 3 ]

Paperback -225 pages                                               by Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani

Excerpt Book Description : Have you ever wondered: What do the Imams and Scholars of mainstream Islam say about the permissibility of commemorating the Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam's birthday (mawlid)? What about the view of a handful of modern ''Salafi'' scholars like Albani, Bin Baz, al-Jazairi, Mashhur Salman, Uthaymin and their followers who forbid it on the grounds that it is an innovation? Read the evidence and then decide for yourself.

Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, and Peace and Blessings upon His Prophet and Messenger Muhammad, his family and all his companions. In Islam there are two festivals (eid - id ) : id al-Adha and id al-Fitr. Other commemorations like that of the Beloved Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam's Birthday (mawlid), are neither obligatory nor forbidden. (Although many reason it should be compulsory). However, we have come to a time in which there is much complaining about the remembrance of the Beloved of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam's Birthday. These objections stem from the ''Salafi'' (Wahhabi/Deobandi type) movements whose followers search for anything that their scholars might consider doubtful and use it as an excuse to mock and denigrate the faith of other Muslims.

To commemorate the Beloved Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam's birthday is to celebrate Islam because the Beloved of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam is the symbol of Islam. This book presents the facts and proofs relating to the commemoration of the Beloved Prophet's Birthday (mawlid) according to the Qur'an, the Sunnah (tradition), and the scholars of Islam... ''

This valuable book also goes into extensive detail about visting (ziyara) the Beloved Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam's grave in Madina t'ul Munnawara, and provides comprehensive proof of the Beloved Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam'sKnowledge of the Unseen (ilm al-Ghayb).

The Brilliance of the Minarets : The Aqidah of Ibn 'Asakir

Paperback - 55 pages

Foreward : The knowledge of religion is amongst the best of the acts of obedience ; and it is the most worthy of allocating the precious time it takes to acquire it. This is especially so because at-Tirmidhi related that the Beloved Prophet, Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam said: ''Allah facilitates a route to Paradise for he who follows a route to seek knowledge.''

The greatest of all knowledge is that of the fundamentals of the creed. This is why the Beloved Messenger of Allah taught it to the Companions (sahaba-i kiram) prior to teaching them the rules of the Religion. In his book, Misbah az-Zujajah al-Busiriyy classified as sahih what ibn Majah related that Jundub ibn Abdullah, may Allah raise his rank, said: ''We were with the Beloved Prophet of Allah Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam, as young men. We learned the matters of the belief before we learned the Qur'an. Then we learned the Qur'an which added to our belief.''

The Aqidah (creed) of Shaykh Fakhr'ud-Din ibn 'Asakir, may Alah endow mercy upon him, contains a multiplicity of meanings in spite of its brevity. In it, the author summarised the creed of the Ahl as-Sunnah w'al Jama'ah with a few brief terms. Its words are easy for children to memorise and enjoyable for adults to study. Furthermore, it became famous among the Muslims. These qualities inspired us to explain its terms in order to facilitate learning and to propagate its message without using lenghty explanations.

Intercession  :  In the Light of Qur'an and Sunna

Paperback - 67 pages                                    by Ukasha al-Tayyibi - Translated by Aisha Bewley

Praise be to Allah who's help we seek and whose forgiveness we ask. On the Day of Judgement Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) will be the only Prophet who will be granted permission to intercede to save mankind from the terrors of awaiting judgment on the Day of Rising.

One must not fail to understand that matters which are great and insignificant, large or small are preordained confirmed in the knowledge of Allah. Surely Allah Almighty has decreed and determined the states of the intercessor, and for whom he intercedes.

The author has taken an analytical approach to prove that inercession can only be granted by Allah's permission, and that Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) will intercede for mankind at five various levels, i.e. from the crossing of the Sirat to the height of peoples rank within the garden of paradise.

Each chapter has been carefully researched and examined according the Qur'an and Hadith, and by reading this book Muslim and non-Muslims alike will have a greater and clearer understanding on the meaning of intercession and what it entails.

The Creed of Imam al-Tahawi

Hardback - 168 pages

Appreciation for The Creed of Imam al-Tahawi

"Shaykh Hamza Yusuf’s is, in my opinion, by far the best rendition to date of this famous and very important treatise. We can expect no less of a scholar of the caliber of Shaykh Hamza Yusuf due to his command over his native tongue, English, as well as his acquired and well-learned Arabic." - Dr. Nizam Yaquby, Mufti of Bahrain

"Shaykh Hamza Yusuf has rendered a service not only to Muslims, but also to a wider audience by his new translation of the Creed of Imam al Tahawi accompanied by an illuminating historical introduction and by helpful biographies and extensive notes. His translation is formal without being archaic and is written in a style that Christians can recognize from their own credal formulations. The work is of value to others than Muslims, for two reasons: first, it provides in 130 short paragraphs a clear presentation of core Muslim belief in a way that is not easily available by other means, thereby providing a very positive instrument for the essential work of dialogue. Secondly, it provides Christians, who have also developed and continue to use credal formulations, with the opportunity to see just where the Islamic understanding of God comes close to the Christian understanding of God. This does much to reduce the credibility of approaches which insist on a thoroughgoing bipolar understanding of Christianity and Islam. Muslims and Christians should welcome this publication."  - Dr. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, UK

"By providing such an accurate, lucid, and theologically sensitive translation of Imam Tahawi's creed, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf has rendered a valuable service to Muslims and non-Muslims alike. This work will take its rightful place among the great works in the English-language Islamic
library." -
Imam Zaid Shakir, Resident Scholar, Zaytuna Institute

"Hamza Yusuf’s Creed of Imam al-Tahawi is an important contribution to scholarship and to Muslim self-understanding. This fluid and accurate translation provides access and insight into a major scholastic work that sets out core Islamic beliefs/doctrines. It will be welcomed by Muslim and non-Muslim readers alike."
-Dr. John L. Esposito, Director, Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, Georgetown University, Washington, DC.

JA AL HAQ : The Obliteration of Falsehood (NEW : 2nd Edition)

Hardback - 600 pages     [ ENGLISH ]       by Mufti Ahmad Yaar Khan Na'imi Ashrafi alayhir rahman

Translated into English:  by Mawlana Omar Dawood Qadiri Mu'ini

ABOUT THE BOOK: The Obliteration of Falsehood is an English translation of Hadrat Mufti Ahmad Yaar Khan Ashrafi's Allah be pleased with him celebrated Ja 'al-Haqq, one of the most complete, recognised and irrefutable works on proving the practices and beliefs of the Muslim Ummah for the questions raised in the modern era.

In an age wherein an increasing number of individuals believe they have the right and power to deduce the fundamentals of Islam based on a superficial understanding of the Qur'an and Hadith, Ja 'al-Haqq stands tall as a testament to the unsurpassed examinations and watertight judgements produced by the eminent researchers in the history of Islam.

Why are Muslims Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki & Hanbali? Why do they celebrate the birth of the Beloved Prophet
Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam ? What is the need to use the Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam as mediation to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala when Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala is constantly with us? The pen of Mufti Ahmad Yaar Khan Allah be pleased with him, leaves no stone unturned in answering these and many other objections currently forwarded to the traditional, Sunni Muslims of our age, confirming that Sunni Islam is still the only path founded on the Qur'an & Sunnah and demonstrating why it remains followed by the largest group of Muslims in the world.----Sayyad Muhammad Aleem ud-Din Asdaq Misbahi Aazmi (Founder, Rector & Principal of Darul Uloom Qadria Ghareeb Nawaz, Ladysmith, South Africa).

A Guide to the Conclusive Proofs for the Principles of Belief : (Kitab al-irshad)

Kitab Al-Irshad Ila Qawati Al-Adilla Fi Usul Ati Tiqad               (Great Books of Islamic Civilisation)

By Imam al-Haramayn al-Juwayni                                                                                  Translated by: Paul E Walker

 Paperback - 388 pages

About this book: This work, commonly known simply as a (The Guide) is a major classic of Islamic theology. Its author, Imān al-Haramayn al-Juwayni may Allah be pleased with him (d. 478/1085), was the leading Ash‘arite (Sunni) theologian of his time but he was more famous for his many important treatises on the principles of law and for having been the teacher of the great Imam al-Ghazzāli may Allah be pleased with him. Nevertheless, his writings in the field of theology, especially the present book, represent the high point of its development in the Islamic world until then.

Here the master sets out systematically what he considered the sure proofs for the principles of any discourse about God and His attributes, about what must be said concerning Him, and how the human being should understand what is possible in respect to God.

About the translator:  The translator, Paul E. Walker, gained his Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Civilisations at the University of Chicago and is a historian of ideas at the same university. He specializes in various aspects of Islamic thought in its classical phase (from the ninth to twelfth century) and has written a number of books about individual figures from that period.

Notions that must be Corrected                          by Sayyad Muhammad Alawi al-Maliki

Paperback - 334 Pages

By : Shaykh Muhammad 'Alawi al-Maliki al-Hasani May Allah be pleased with him
Foreword by: Shaykh Hasanayn Muhammad Makhluf
Translated by: Suraqah Abdul Aziz

Notions That Must Be Corrected is perhaps the most important and renowned work of the late Sayyid, Shaykh Muhammad b. ‘Alawī al-Maliki al-Hasani rahmatullahi alayh. Throughout his masterpiece the author offers valuable and wise words of caution against extremism and invites the Muslims to the path of Ahl al-Sunna wal-Jamā‘a, the hallmark of which is tolerance and moderation. Sayyid Muhammad expertly clarifies the correct position relating to numerous ‘controversial’ contemporary topics whilst maintaining strict adherence to the Qur’ān, the Sunna, and the way of the Salaf.

The book itself has been divided into three parts, the first of which is concerned with areas of research relating to Islamic doctrine, including clarifying the corruption found in the criterion for imputing others with disbelief and misguidance, as well as concepts such as intermediation and intercession. The second section deals with issues relating to the Beloved Prophet May Allah Bless him and Grant him Peace, including his unique characteristics, the reality of Prophecy, the reality of humanity, and the correct understanding of seeking blessings from the Beloved Prophet May Allah Bless him and Grant him Peace, and his relics. The final part deals with miscellaneous areas of research including the Isthmus life (barzakh), the legality of visiting the Beloved Prophet May Allah Bless him and Grant him Peace, and other related matters such as relics, sanctuaries, and festive religious occasions.

Scores of Islamic scholars hailing from all parts of the world wrote commendations for this work, while many more have taught from it, or written about it in their articles. The huge positive impact the book made in Islamic circles unfortunately led to hardship for the noble Shaykh in his home country due to misguided verdicts levelled against him. He was prevented from teaching in the Masjid al-Haram and his position at Umm al-Qurra’ University was also terminated. Numerous vicious personal attacks and baseless replies from those who opposed the methodology of Ahl al-Sunna were also published. In response to this, leading scholars throughout the world vehemently defended the noble Shaykh and wrote extensive and decisive refutations of his detractors.

''This book should be required reading for the Islamic world, and should be studied and taught to children because of the explicit truth, correct views and defence of Islam’s sanctities that it contains. This book clarifies the misguidance, lies, and false claims of the enemy, and certainly, Allah shall aid His righteous servants by aiding His religion.''
---- Shaykh Hasanayn Muhammad Makhluf
