Description :

Imam al-Qushayri's Risala on Tasawwuf has served as a primary textbook for many generations of Sufi novices down to the present. It gives us an illuminating insight into the everyday lives of Sufi devotees of the eighth-eleventh centuries C.E. and the moral and ethical dilemmas they were facing in trying to strike a delicate balance between their ascetic and mystical convictions and the exigencies of life in a society governed by rank, wealth, and military power.

This is a Sufi book of the highest order where the spiritual ascent is opened for the reader through quotations from the Qur'an al-karim, aHadith and sayings of early Sufis --- a must for all aspirers, of the greatest works of the early Sufis

This Edition : The footnotes are entirely from the commentary of Imam and Shaykh al-Islam Zakariya al-Ansari's larger commentary on the Risalah of al-Qushayri. It breaks down or facilitates ease in understanding the problematic text and wordings of the Risalah.

Imam Abu'l Qasim 'Abd al-Karim al-Qushayri, may Allah be pleased with him, was the student of the leading sufi scholar of the time; Shaykh Abu `Ali al-Daqqaq, may Allah be pleased with him. Al-Qushayri, was a muhaddith [master of aHadith] who transmitted hadith to pupils by the thousands in Naysabur, in which he fought the Mu`tazila until he flew to Makkah to protect his life. He was also a mufassir who wrote a complete commentary of the Qur'an entitled Lata'if al-Isharat bi Tafsir al-Qur'an (The Subtleties and Allusions in the Commentary of the Qur'an). Al-Qushayri, may Allah be pleased with him, was born in 986 CE in the province of Khurasan, the richest centre of eastern Islamic civilisation.

Shaykh al Islam Imam Zakariyya al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, was a leading Islamic scholar of the 15th century. As a student, al-Ansari studied under al-Qayati, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli, and Sharaf al-Din al-Munawi. Zakariyya al-Ansari held the office of Shafi'i Qadi for a twenty-year period. Over the course of his lifetime, al-Ansari spent eighty years engaged as a teacher and mufti. One of al-Ansari's students was Imam al-Sha’rani, who was responsible for much of the information that survives in regards to the life of al-Ansari. Of his teacher, al-Sha’rani wrote that al-Ansari was, “a pillar of the fiqh and the tasawwuf” Al-Ansari died in 1520, in Cairo, at the age of 100. He was given the honorary title “Shaykh al-Islam".
