Description :

This Arabic-English translation of Mutanabbi's Diwan is one of the classical works of Arabic literature. He primarily wrote panegyrics in a flowery, bombastic, and highly influential style marked by improbable metaphors.

Al-Mutanabbi’s pride and arrogance set the tone for much of his verse, which is ornately rhetorical yet crafted with consummate skill and artistry. He gave to the traditional qasidah, or ode, a freer and more personal development, writing in what can be called a neoclassical style that combined some elements of Iraqi and Syrian stylistics with classical features.

Al-Mutannabi's poetry endured because of his extraordinary ability to describe human emotions and his profound insights on life. Lines from many of his poems on human nature and the fluctuations of fortune have become proverbs and much-quoted wisdom. His work continues to influence Arab poets to the present.

Abu Tayyib Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Mutanabbi.  Al-Mutanabbi was born in Kufa, Iraq 915AH. He was the son of a water carrier who claimed noble and ancient Southern Arabian descent. Because of his poetic talent, al-Mutanabbī received an education.

He lived a short, turbulent life of about 50 years. He was born in Iraq but traveled extensively, crisscrossing Syria and Egypt, then returning to Iraq and Persia in search of political and monetary rewards. Proud to the extent of arrogance and critical of his enemies, he was assassinated in his birthplace of Iraq, on his way home from Persia.
