Description
:

The Handbook on Islam is one of the clearest and most comprehensive expositions of the fundamental sciences of the Life-Transaction (Deen) of Islam available in the English language. Originally written by Shaykh Uthman dan Fodio, the Islamic scholar and spiritual leader of the heroic jihad which founded the immense Sokoto Caliphate of West Africa in the early part of the 19th century.

Aisha Bewley's translation manages to preserve the sense of immediacy, clarity and accessibility which is as much of a safe haven today in the vast jungle of excessive preoccupation with competing and conflicting detail, as it must have been in its original setting faced with the confusions of war and the urgent need to preserve the purity of the Deen for the common Muslims.

Topics discussed include :

  • ---The Roots of the Life Transactions,
  • ---The Science of Fiqh,
  • ---the Science of Tawhid,
  • ---the Science of Tasawwuf,
  • ---Kitab 'Usul ad-Deen,
  • ---Al-Kitab Ulum al-Mu'amala,
  • ---Song of Shaykh Malam an-Nasr al-Kibari,
  • ---Kitab Masa'il al-Muhimma.

Shaykh Uthman Dan Fodio : Born in 1168 AH.  Shaykh 'Uthman well known as 'dan Fodio 'which literally meant' son of the scholar', as his father was already a well known and established scholar in Hausa-land. For the next thirty years Shakyh Uthman, along with his family, relatives, fellow scholars and students, committed themselves to da'wah (calling to Islam) and teaching tours throughout Hausa land (West Africa) : calling people to establish Islam in their hearts and homes; adhere to the Qur'an, Sunnah and Ijma (or consensus) of the Sunni scholars; forsake innovation; show compassion towards all Muslims; and to end all forms of political and economic oppression.

When the rulers became fearful and envious of Shaykh Uthman`s large and loyal following of believers, they began persecuting the Muslims severely. This led to their being blessed by Allah to perform hijra (emigration) and ultimately to their successful jihad (military struggle) against the Hausa kings. Their blessed jihad established an Islamic Caliphate in 1807 CE that became one of the most righteous, just and equitable societies this world has ever known.
