Occasions & Circumstances of Revelation,
*[A5] Large Paperback - 511 pages,
by Imam Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi [d.468h],
Published by Dar al-Wahi.

Description :

Asbab-al-Nuzul or occasions and circumstances for the revelations; refers to a field of study and genre of literature devoted to recounting the circumstances of the Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ, and his followers when particular verses from the Qur'an were revealed.

Legal scholars regard this study as of great importance, on the principle that sound understanding of the revelation proceeds from knowing the reasons Allah revealed the Qur'an and how the Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ, applied the revelation when he received it. Asbab al-Nuzul sheds light on the ayah, it enlightens the tafsir and application of the ayah.

The earliest and the most important work in this genre is undoubtedly Kitab Asbab al-Nuzul (Book of Occasions and Circumstances of revelation) of Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi in which he mention occasions of about 570 verses out of 6236 verses of the Qur'an.

Imam Wahidi's work is not only the first attempt to collect all the material regarding the occasions of revelation in one single volume, but it is also the standard upon which all subsequent works were based.

About Imam al-Wahidi :

He is Abu'l-Hasan `Ali Ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn `Ali Ibn Mattuyah al-Wahidi al-Mattuwi al-Shafi'i, the author of the celebrated commentaries on the Qur'an. He was also the first master of his time in the sciences of grammar and Qur'anic exegesis. He was born in 398 hijri, in Nishapur.

He was coinsidered an expert in the tafsir (commentary of the Holy Qur'an), Asbab Al-Nuzul Al-Qur'an (Causes of the Revelation of the Noble Qur'an), in Arabic & in History.  He also composed a treatise on the motives for which the different portions of the Qur'an were revealed; a work called the Takhbir (Indication), containing an explanation of the (Ninety-Nine) excellent names given to God; a full commentary on the poems of Diwan al-Mutanabbi, surpassing in excellence all the numerous works on the same subject, and containing many curious observations.

Imam al-Wahidi was a student of Imam al-Tha`labi, the author of celebrated commentary of the Qur'an. He learned from him the science of Qur`anic interpretation, and ended by surpassing him. He died of a lingering disease in 486 AH / being 1076 Common Era), at Naisapur.

Imam al-Wahidi said :

'The knowledge about Tafsir of the ayah is not possible
without occupying oneself with their stories and explanation
of (the reasons) for their revelation'.
