The Tears is the first English translation of
Al-Abarat, which was first published in 1915 in Arabic by the Egyptian scholar Mustafa Lutfi Al-Manfaluti and translated here into English by Majid Khan Malik Siddiqui. It is an Arabic course book often taught in the final years of the
Dars e Nizami (Islamic Scholarship) curriculum.
Al-Abarat is also taught at universities worldwide as part of an advanced Arabic learning programme, especially in Cairo, at the Al-Azhar University.
Al-Abarat consists of eight short stories, The Orphan, The Veil, The Abyss, The Punishment, The Martyrs, The Remembrance, The Reward and The Victim. Some are his own and some are translations of writers such as Chateavbriand, and Alexandre Dumas Fils.
These touching stories are compassionate tales of love, hope and kindness amidst tragedy grievance and sacrifice. 'The Tears' is designed to evoke every emotion and sympathy for the diverse characters, melting even the hardest of hearts. After reading this book you will never be the same.
Alongside the English translation, this book also contains the original Arabic text in order for students to make a lingual comparison, and cross translate for meaningful analysis. The main purpose of this work is to enhance the higher reading and analytical skills of Arabic students, enabling them to read the most sophisticated pieces of Arabic texts effectively.
About the Author :
He is Al-Imam al-Sayyid Mustafa Lutfi Al-Manfaluti, born in 1294 Hijri (1876 Common Era) in Manfalut, which is in the province of Asyut, Egypt. His father was a prominent
Qadhi (Judge) and was of Arab origin and his mother was part Turkish. His family tree goes back to Imam Husayn,
radi Allahu ta'ala anhu.
Mustufa Lutfi al-Manfaluti memorised the Noble Qur'an in his youth and went onto study the sacred sciences at Al-Azhar University for ten years in keeping with the family tradition. He studied the exegesis of the Qur'an, but excelled in literature and linguistics, which seemed to be his motivation. Hence he became a distinguished and highly talented Arabic
writer of his time and was known
as the reviver of the Arabic language. He had the ability to touch the emotions of people in depth through poetic structure, metaphorical language and sophisticated eloquent imagery.
He translated many French plays into Arabic and
authored many other works. He passed away in Egypt in 1343
hijri (25th July 1924).
